Jack Kelly of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, on the west's continuing (and potentially, fatal) embrace of appeasement. As he notes, many leaders on the left are less afraid of radical Islam than they are oblivious to it. Kelly brilliantly illustrates this point with a recent comment from a member of Tony Blair's cabinet, who was outraged that the Iranians released photos of that captured female sailor smoking.
Horrors! Never mind that the sailors and Royal Marines were taken illegally. Or that Iran used them as propaganda tools--in violation of the Geneva Convention. Or that the west apparently caved to Tehran's demands in securing the captives release, while Iran paid no price.
No, the real danger in that photograph, according to Blair's Health Minister, Patricia Hewitt, is that the female hostage was shown smoking. "This sends completely the wrong message to our young people," according to Ms. Hewitt.
So does feckless behavior on the part of our leaders, as Jack Kelly points out.
