The Beauty of a Guaranteed Contract

CBS anchor Couric not worried by poor ratings.

If you believe that, I've got a hot deal for ya on a bridge in Brooklyn.

You'd better believe that CBS News is concerned about the ratings; they're not paying Ms. Couric $15 million a year for ratings lower than those of her "interim anchor" predecessor, Bob Schieffer.

One thing's for sure: the network will not allow Couric to languish in third place for a decade or longer, as it did with Dan Rather. Ms. Perky has no more than five years to turn things around, and the clock is ticking. If she can't get the Evening News out of the ratings cellar, look for CBS to pull the plug around 2010-2011, and announce her "promotion" as a full-time correspondent at 60 Minutes (with a much smaller paycheck, of course).
