As noted a couple of days ago, former California Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham is likely on his way to federal prison, after being convicted on bribery charges. Cunningham accepted more than $2 in bribes from various co-conspirators, including a sweetheart deal to sell his former San Diego home to a defense contractor. That sale--at a greatly inflated price--allowed Cunningham and his wife to "trade up" and buy a more expensive home. It also triggered an investigation that eventually led to his indictment and conviction.
Not to be outdone, Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush of Illinois is resorting to a more tried-and-true solution to his real estate problems. Turns out that Rush hasn't paid his mortgage since July, and is now facing possible foreclosure.
Unlike Cunningham, Rush has done nothing illegal. But it's more than ironic that one of the most liberal members of the house--anxious to spend your tax dollars on any number of pork barrell projects--is a little slow when it comes to mailing in his monthly mortgage payments.
I'll go way out on a limb here, and predict that Bobby Rush will not face foreclosure on his home. I'm sure there is at least one Chicago bank who'd be willing to help the Congressman out (in exchange for some favorable votes in the House)--and that's when the ethics investigation should begin.
